Live a grounded life
A floor that slows the room
A tatami mat is built to be sat on. Each part has a job. Together they make a room where you stay a little longer, and breathe a little slower.
Soft, fragrant, warm
The face is soft under the hand. A new mat has a light scent. The color is warm. That is the calm: it asks you to slow down.
This is the omote, the igusa weave. The ridges are the softness. The scent lives in the rush.
A living material
Tatami breathes with the year. The rush takes in moisture when the air is damp. In the cold, the core holds a little warmth. A gentle scent stays through the seasons.
Daily life leaves marks. The mat takes them on. That is how it becomes part of the room.
For the life you have now
The same mat can fill a room, or sit in one corner of an apartment. A place to rest. A place for tea.
It is the floor that makes that corner quiet.
Bring that comfort home
Three parts do the work. The cloth border, heri, finishes the edge. The woven face, omote, is what you touch. The base, toko, carries your weight.
- Cloth border.
- 表 Omote. The woven surface.
- 床 Doko. The base.
The base
Under the face is the toko. This one is a board sandwich: a firm white core between layers of pressed fiber, with a thin back along the bottom.
The sandwich keeps the mat even and light. The face is what you feel. The base is what holds the shape.
